Thrawn is a Grand Admiral in the Empire, though he is a blue-skinned, red-eyed alien from a species (the Chiss) that lives far outside the Empire's influence. Many ask how a non-human rose so high in the Imperial ranks, with history and custom and ill-feeling set hard against him. The answer is simple. He is a genius tactician, the best the galaxy has seen in quite some time.

He learns what he can of a species' psychology from their artworks. It's amazing what one can learn about people from such seemingly innocuous and unrelated materials.
